ROOTS AND WINGS
ACHIEVING EFFORTLESS EASE IN ASANA AND BEYOND
All Levels
The definition of asana is ́Sthira Sukam Asanamî or steady, joyful seat. In order to achieve this steadiness we need to learn to put down roots in our postures. However, if we only focus on our grounding we find the poses are heavy and effortful. To be joyful and find ease in the postures we must learn to take flight and allow lightness to enter in. This essential balance between downward flow (apana) and upward, forward movement (prana) is the key to creating effortless asana. In our lives it is also important to be grounded and practical, yet free enough to dream and move beyond our limitations. The lessons of asana practice are instructive, not just on the mat, but off the mat as well.
In this workshop we will explore, in a vinyasa practice, both the roots and the wings of standing poses, balancing poses, and some inversions. We will also begin to refine this critical balance of grounding and expanding through our breath, which greatly enhances the practice of vinyasa.
